Checking your Fork Truck for Safety
A fork truck, similar to any industrial machinery, should be used with care. Unlike a car, a fork truck is steered from the back wheel and therefore has a different center of balance. Anyone using a fork truck and everyone working in the vicinity of this particular equipment needs to know safe operating measures and workplace safety guidelines.
Safe operation of a fork truck initially includes inspecting the truck before driving it. Operators should inspect for potential dangers like fluid leaks and worn tires. The lifts, forks as well as the overhead guard should be checked thoroughly. The safety handle must be used just when the forklift is being mounted.
The horns, alarms and lights must be checked to guarantee that they are working properly. Monitors and gauges should be adjusted properly. The seat should be adjusted and safety belt fastened prior to starting the truck.
To avoid tipping the machinery, always choose the low rate speed when driving and take turns cautiously. If the load blocks the vision of the operator, the truck should be driven in reverse gear. Be aware of the location of any pedestrians and obstacles while driving.
To avoid any possibility of injury, the operator should always sit within the cage enclosure and keep all parts of the body inside. The forks should be kept a few inches above the floor when driving. Never raise or lower lifts while you are driving or the truck might become unstable. Never permit anybody to walk under lift when the engines are running.
Basic driving safety includes stopping at intersections and watching for approaching traffic. It is a good idea to sound the horn before proceeding as well as periodically when operating in aisles. That way, you would warn any approaching individual to your presence.
