Basic Fuel Types of Forklifts

Forklifts are powered lift trucks which are utilized in a wide variety of industries to move heavy materials and products. Forklifts are tough and dependable machines that are necessary tools in warehouse and construction settings. Lift truck units differ depending on the type of fuel which is used to power the lift truck and the type of work environment.

Electricity

Electric forklifts are great for work sites that have limited ventilation since they produce no exhaust fumes and are fairly quiet. They are designed to be powered by large, industrial-strength batteries. As the electric lift truck batteries need charging, the worksite must have a charging station. The batteries are durable and can be re-charged up to 1,500 times before they need to be replaced. The charging station should be located in a ventilated area and include an emergency eyewash station and an acid spill kit.

Propane

Forklifts powered by liquid propane have several benefits over diesel and electric powered equipment making them quite common in industrial and warehouse environments. Propane engines are a lot cleaner than diesel-powered units. There is no down time needed to recharge an industrial battery, and the cost of electricity is more than the cost of propane. A lift truck propane tank could be easily and quickly refueled by changing out the empty tank with a full tank. Typically an off-site supplier refills the empty tank, making refueling very safe and efficient.

Diesel and Gasoline

Gasoline and Diesel forklifts are the equipment of choice for rough terrain and outdoor applications. They are normally found on construction sites and lumber yards. Their disadvantages comprise fairly high maintenance requirements, odorous exhaust and relatively high fuel costs. Their benefits comprise dependability in tough conditions and a longer lifespan compared to other units. Gasoline and diesel units must be refueled at a supply station on site which meets health and safety policies.
