Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
The rough terrain forklift is intended for construction sites, where supplies have to be transported around on unpaved surfaces. The proper and safe use of rough terrain forklifts is important to be able to ensure the wellbeing of both the operator and other employees at the work site.
Terrain
These trucks are made for rough terrain, but care should still be taken to be able to avoid tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and should only be operated on level ground when lifting.
Speed
Drivers of forklifts should always drive at a safe speed even though there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations governing the speed limits of forklifts. Driving on terrain which is rough or uneven needs even more caution. Steering, in particular, could be very dangerous at faster speeds.
Incline
Keep the load on the uphill side of the machine if operating on an incline. The rule of thumb is drive up, and then back down. Do not try to lift a load if operating on a sloped surface. The change in the center of gravity can cause the equipment to tip over.
Safety Devices
Operators of forklifts should always put on seat belts like any driver. Make sure that the overhead guard is firmly in position. Depending on the working environment, eye and hearing protection might need to be worn. Check that a working fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
Climate can affect forklift operating conditions. Speed, turning and load handling might need to be adjusted to guarantee safety when operating a forklift in rain, snow or ice.
