Aerial Manlift Dangers
Aerial manlifts are machines which use either a series of linked, folding supports, such as an articulated boom lift or a scissor lift or a boom lift. These industrial pieces of machinery enable workers to access hard-to-reach places. In some ways, these machinery have made construction a lot safer and easier, however, the general safety that comes with the unparalleled mobility of aerial manlifts has implemented a new list of hazards that can accidentally result in serious injury or even death to operators who are unaware.
Falls
Falls from a man lift usually happens when workers fail to or are unable to wear a safety harness or cannot secure the harness to the lift. Falls can occur when someone on the platform acts unsuitably and participates in an activity like climbing the guard rails to gain additional height. What's more, mishaps can be caused if the ground-based operator causes the machinery to move in an unexpected motion prior to the employee being properly secured.
Many workers also fall because the base of their equipment is accidentally struck by some other heavy object. During this situation, the force of the blow below becomes amplified by the length of the lift, therefore causing the employee to be suddenly catapulted off of the platform. Clearly this hazardous action has terrible outcome.
Tip-Overs
Sadly, boom lifts are easily susceptible to tipping over. Tip-overs could take place in any kind of lift, but are more frequent in articulated boom lifts. As boom lifts can move both vertically and horizontally, they are capable of changing the machinery's overall center of gravity. Therefore, if the lift is over loaded or parked on a slope of some type, totally extending the boom when it is in the wrong position can result in a tip-over situation.
